The RV Celtic Explorer (IMO: 9244439) is Ireland’s premier state-owned research vessel, designed to serve as a highly sophisticated, multi-purpose platform for offshore marine science and deep-water exploration. Commissioned in 2003 and operated by the Marine Institute in Galway, this 65.5-meter ship is uniquely engineered to meet strict ICES 209 noise standards, making it acoustically silent so it can survey marine life without disturbing fish behavior. Equipped with advanced dynamic positioning, 145 square meters of laboratory space, and heavy-duty winches, it regularly deploys deep-sea instruments and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to map the seabed at depths down to 5,000 meters. With a 35-day sea endurance, it plays a vital role in international oceanographic research, fisheries acoustic surveys, and climate studies across the North Atlantic.
